Position Summary

WMUA is seeking a skilled and dependable Mechanic / Senior Sewage Plant Repairer Mechanic to perform maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance on wastewater treatment plant equipment, pumps, motors, vehicles, and related mechanical systems. This position supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of WMUA facilities and infrastructure.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, overhaul, and maintain pumps, motors, blowers, compressors, hydraulic and flow valves, generators, piping systems, and other wastewater treatment equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and lubrication in accordance with manufacturer specifications and WMUA schedules.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and equipment-control malfunctions using appropriate testing and diagnostic tools.
  • Repair, adjust, regulate, and maintain chemical feed equipment, chlorinators, sludge digestion pumps, flowmeters, and related plant machinery.
  • Install, align, adjust, and replace mechanical components, including belts, gears, bearings, valves, fittings, gaskets, packing, and pipe sections.
  • Maintain and repair Authority vehicles, trucks, and motorized construction or utility equipment, as assigned.
  • Perform welding, fabrication, and metal repair work when required.
  • Participate in emergency repairs and respond to equipment failures or operational needs.
  • Assist with general facility, building, and grounds maintenance, including minor carpentry, concrete repair, painting, and related assignments.
  • Operate tools, vehicles, diagnostic instruments, and maintenance equipment safely and properly.
  • Maintain accurate work orders, maintenance logs, repair records, time and cost documentation, and parts or materials records.
  • Obtain, store, safeguard, and properly use tools, equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • May provide guidance or lead direction to maintenance employees or assigned helpers.
  • Follow all applicable safety requirements, environmental regulations, WMUA policies, and operating procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience

  • Two (2) years of experience maintaining and repairing complex industrial mechanical equipment, including pumps, compressors, hydraulic or flow valves, control panels, generators, electric motors, and piping systems.
  • Experience in wastewater treatment, public utilities, public works, municipal operations, industrial maintenance, or a closely related environment is highly desirable.

Training

  • Successful completion of one (1) year of training in automotive technology, industrial maintenance, mechanical technology, or a related discipline at an accredited community college, vocational school, or technical school is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid New Jersey driver’s license is required when vehicle operation is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
  • A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and applicable endorsements may be required based on assigned vehicles or equipment.
  • A current New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Wastewater Treatment Operator license may be required based on assignment.
  • ASE, welding, emissions, refrigeration, powered industrial truck, or other job-related certifications may be required or preferred depending on assigned duties.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater treatment machinery, pumps, motors, vehicles, and industrial mechanical systems.
  • Ability to diagnose equipment failures and determine appropriate repair methods, parts, adjustments, and alignments.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, specifications, diagrams, blueprints, schematics, and manufacturer guidance.
  • Ability to safely use mechanic’s hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, measuring instruments, and electrical or mechanical diagnostic devices.
  • Ability to disassemble, rebuild, adjust, reassemble, reinstall, and align mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Ability to maintain essential records and use electronic or manual work-order and information systems.
  • Ability to work independently, collaborate effectively with others, and communicate clearly in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety, environmental compliance, accountability, and reliable public service.

Physical and Work Requirements

  • Ability to perform physically demanding mechanical and manual work, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, reach, lift, carry, push, and pull tools, parts, equipment, and materials.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and facility conditions and to enter confined spaces when properly trained and authorized.
  • Ability to participate in emergency response, overtime, on-call, weekend, or holiday assignments when operationally required.
