Position Summary
The Willingboro Municipal Utilities Authority (WMUA) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Principal Laboratory Technician – Water Analysis to lead and perform laboratory testing and analysis of potable water and wastewater samples. This position conducts chemical and bacteriological analyses, supports regulatory compliance, maintains laboratory equipment, and provides guidance to laboratory personnel.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical laboratory skills, careful attention to detail, and a commitment to water quality, public health, laboratory safety, and accurate recordkeeping.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct chemical, microbiological, and bacteriological testing of potable water, wastewater, and related environmental samples.
- Perform analyses for substances that may include trace metals, volatile organic compounds, pesticides, herbicides, Total Organic Carbon (TOC), and other regulated contaminants.
- Provide technical guidance and instruction to laboratory technicians and other assigned staff.
- Use quality control procedures and control specimens to verify the accuracy and validity of laboratory test results.
- Set up, operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments, equipment, and testing apparatus.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on laboratory equipment.
- Prepare reagents, standards, solutions, and indicators used in testing and analysis.
- Interpret, document, and report laboratory data and test results.
- Maintain laboratory records, files, logs, and quality assurance documentation.
- Prepare technical reports and required regulatory documentation.
- Follow applicable laboratory safety practices, guidelines, and procedures.
- Use electronic laboratory information systems, computerized databases, and manual recordkeeping systems as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience: Three (3) years of experience conducting standardized basic chemical and/or bacteriological testing and analysis on water samples.
Education Substitution: Successful completion of sixty (60) semester-hour credits at an accredited college or university, including sixteen (16) semester-hour credits in chemistry and a course in organic chemistry, may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
License: A valid New Jersey driver’s license will be required only if operating a vehicle is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a drinking water or wastewater treatment laboratory.
- Familiarity with New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection requirements and applicable water quality regulations.
- Experience with laboratory quality assurance and quality control procedures.
- Experience leading, training, or providing technical guidance to laboratory personnel.
- Proficiency with laboratory information systems and Microsoft Office applications.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of standardized chemical and microbiological testing methods used for water analysis.
- Knowledge of chemical compounds, contaminants, and microorganisms found in potable water and wastewater.
- Ability to perform chemical tests, examinations, and analyses of varying complexity.
- Ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Ability to interpret and apply information from laboratory reference manuals.
- Ability to interpret, record, and report laboratory test results accurately.
- Ability to prepare solutions and indicators and maintain complete laboratory records and files.
- Ability to communicate effectively and provide guidance to laboratory personnel.
